The good, the bad, the ugly...

People always complain about Dubai when they just arrive. The inefficiency of the city is one major problem. However, I realized the root of the problem. The foreign workers, mainly those in construction and service, here have this mentality that if they finish their job fast, once the job ends, they will be deported back. So they believe by prolonging the job, they will stay longer, therefore earning more.

The Bad and the Ugly

Now back to why i mentioned about them being slow. I have been here for a month and their internet company, du, has not solved my internet connection problems. This is supposed to be a global business city, but like every growing city, there are its flaws. Even the HSBC banks here works terribly slowly. I don't know if its because people only work half day here during Ramadan or they are just relaxed by nature.

My colleague was looking for an apartment here and the property agent arrived with a thick gold chain, half buttoned shirt with chest hair sticking out, that is on top of being late. And when he brought him up to the property that my friend was supposed to view, he conveniently mention that he forgot the keys. My poor friend met a few of these similar agents and it almost drove him up the wall. The usual comment that people would tell you when you whine about such matters would be, "welcome to Dubai!"

The good

But there is one thing I have to comment about the people here. Since everyone is mostly from everywhere else in the world, foreigners here don't really know the locals. many of the locals also keep to themselves. I mean, if my city is occupied by 85% expats, i would do the same. But there are really some really nice locals, and I have been blessed to meet a few of them.

I left my wallet with cash at a seat, and it took be 30 minute to realize that I've lost it. I was half expecting it to be lost, it was a party, there was money, people were high and I thought that this was it! But to my amazement, when i got back, this local was there waiting for me with my wallet. And this happened on two different instances. Honestly is one of the biggest virtue that the locals have.

Oh well... thank you to you strangers!
