We sometimes forget how lucky we are...

I have to put this on my blog, at 3.30am at night because I think its seriously bugging me.

I met a friend from Singapore Airlines for some drinks this evening and it made me understand a different side of him. All I knew about this friend from OCS (officer cadet school in the military) was that he is headstrong and when he sets his mind to something, he would work towards it.

Today, we were talking about him considering a career transition to something more permanent. He started telling me about him supporting his family, and his god-son. It was really quite a surprise for me when he talked about this god son of his. My friend is only 26 and his parents have retired so basically, he is the man of the house for the past 2 years. Paying the bills and the home loans. In this situation, if a stranger, your sister's friend had a baby and she needed help raising him, would you help?

We are all selfish by nature. But what he said really made me realize how much the milk of human kindness can do. His family took them (the young mother) and the baby in, unconditionally. Now the mother has kind of washed her hands off the baby and he is supporting the child. He said that if someone was in a dire situation and the problem is placed in front of you, if you can do something to help, why not?

That made me realize actually how lucky I am to not have these problems to worry about. Sometimes, when placed in situations like this, you have to grow up faster and take up more responsibilities. I take my hat off him.

But when we look at this situation, we can learn a lot from it. We are all brothers and sisters of the world and helping another being should not be because of beneficial gains. His godson is now 2 years old and growing up all charming and cute. It makes me really wonder, if i was placed in this situation, can I be as selfless as he is? Can you?
